CHAOS TO CALM

Posted: 2025-01-14

The literal meaning of the word "stress" is pressure. Although we commonly talk about all types of pressure, we mostly refer to emotional and mental stress. This word has become a staple in today’s fast-paced life, finding its place in nearly every conversation. Yet, many of us fail to understand its mental and emotional impact fully. Let us delve into the story of Soham, a 27-year-old professional overwhelmed by stress, and learn how mental health coach Ram helped him regain control of his life.

The First Encounter

Soham entered Ram’s office, his face clouded with anxiety.
"I feel like I’m trapped, Ram," he said. "Everything feels like it’s weighing me down—work, family, society, even social media. I can’t handle it anymore."

Ram smiled reassuringly and said, "Soham, let’s analyze this together. Stress isn’t your enemy; it’s your body’s way of signaling that something needs attention. But if it remains unresolved, it will take control of your life. If we don’t learn to manage stress in time, stress will end up managing us. First, let’s understand what you’re facing."

What Is Mental Stress?

Ram explained, "Mental stress occurs when there’s a mismatch between your expectations and reality. It’s a state where the mind feels extremely exhausted, leading to emotional and physical strain. Stress itself isn’t bad; short-term stress can motivate you to meet deadlines or perform better. However, chronic stress, if left unresolved, can lead to mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, or stress disorders."

Soham nodded with interest and asked, "But how do I figure out what’s causing my stress?"

Types of Stress

Ram listed the different types of stress that might be affecting Soham:

  • Academic Stress: "Remember your school days? Staying up late to study, exam pressure, and competition can drain students."
  • Social Stress: "Societal expectations can sometimes feel like an invisible hand dictating your actions. Our family’s financial and social standing often heightens these expectations."
  • Work Stress: "Balancing office work and household responsibilities is challenging. Unfinished tasks and toxic work environments can disrupt your peace of mind."
  • Social Media Stress: "Today’s generation can hardly be imagined without social media. Comparing your life with the curated perfection online can make you feel inadequate."
  • Parental Stress: "Meeting parental expectations or worrying about their health can add significant pressure."
  • Family Stress: "Conflicts within the family or the burden of family responsibilities can leave you feeling drained."

Soham sighed deeply and said, "I thought I was dealing with all of these."

Ram reassured him, "You’re not alone, Soham. Let’s dig deeper and find solutions together."

Soham’s Journey of Transformation

During their sessions, Ram introduced Soham to Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), a modern, fast-paced transformative approach to managing stress.

"Think of your brain as a computer," Ram explained. "NLP helps you rewrite the code. By identifying and reprogramming negative thought patterns, you can regain control over your emotions and actions."

Here’s how NLP helped Soham:

  1. Reframing Thoughts: Soham learned to view stress as a challenge rather than a threat. For example, instead of thinking, "I can’t finish this project," he started thinking, "What’s the first step I can take to make progress?"
  2. Anchoring Positive States: Ram taught Soham how to anchor feelings of calmness by pressing his thumb and forefinger together. This gave him instant control during stressful moments.
  3. Visualizing Success: Soham practiced visualizing positive outcomes, which boosted his confidence and motivation. Psychologist Richard Murphy once said, "Positive thinking leads to positive results."
  4. Building Rapport with Himself: Using NLP techniques, Soham learned to silence his inner critic and develop self-compassion.

A New Beginning

Within a few weeks, Soham noticed a transformation in himself. He was no longer paralyzed by stress; instead, he felt ready to tackle life’s challenges.

"I’ve learned that stress doesn’t have to control me," Soham said during his final session. "Thanks to NLP, I can now approach life with clarity and confidence."
